Instructor Bio:
Lisa Karrow, MPT, CLT-LANA is a certified Lymphedema therapist who has worked for Fairview for over 20 years.  She obtained her Master of Physical Therapy from Mayo's School of Health-Related Sciences in Rochester, MN in 1993 and in 1997 earned her lymphedema certification.  She became nationally certified through the Lymphology Association of North America (LANA) in 2001.  Lisa has completed advanced level Edema/Lymphedema and Cancer Rehab Courses and has lectured on Edema management and lymphedema to both the University of MN, St. Catherine’s Physical therapy programs, and Fairview Rehab services.  She currently serves as an adjunct educator for Fairview's Pelvic Health Residency program in her specialties.

Making Sense of Inpatient Edema Management image
Course Description:

This course is designed to assist beginner to intermediate edema therapists (OT, PT, COTA, PTA), serving patients in Fairview's inpatient settings, become more familiar with edema management including the medically complex patient.  Lymphedema certification is not required.  Medical conditions to be examined include liver disease, kidney disease, CHF, DVTs, decreased skin integrity, cellulitis, oncology related edema, post-surgical, scrotal edema, and medical edema.  It is recommended that individuals attending this course complete the 'IP Edema Orientation' process or are familiar with the orientation materials.  This course will review etiology of edema, precautions, and contraindications for treatment, follow the care plan continuum including when to initiate, hold, discontinue, and provide appropriate discharge recommendations, and examine variations in edema management techniques through case studies with emphasis on critical thinking. 

Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of this course, the participant should be able to:
  • Comprehend anatomy & physiology of the lymphatic/circulatory systems as they relate to both normal function as well as etiology of edema.
  • Recognize and understand precautions and contraindications of edema management interventions.
  • Develop critical thinking skills to apply appropriate edema management techniques in    the inpatient settings.
  • Recognize when and how edema management interventions and care plan should be modified.
  • Identify when to refer a patient to Outpatient/Home Care Edema Services
