Instructor Bio:
Erin is a Clinical Specialist for MiHealth Fairview specializing in neurological, vestibular and concussion care. She has worked as a full-time clinician for MHealth Fairview since 2015 in Burnsville’s outpatient rehab clinic. She has also been teaching neuro rehabilitation as a lab and teaching assistant for the University of Minnesota since 2018. She is a graduate of MGH Institute of Health Professions and over the past year has taken over 50 hours of formal continuing education on Parkinson’s. From these learnings she has explored resources and consolidated information into helpful guides to share with MHealth Fairview clinicians. She has an appreciation for the limited time therapists have for continued education, and the barriers to applying learned concepts into the clinic. What ‘fills her cup’ as a clinician, educator, and as your colleague, is simplifying and sharing information to make it easier to elevate care.

A survey of 48 outpatient physical therapists who treat patients with Parkinson’s in MHealth Fairview reflects most of us are trained in LSVTBIG, and most of us are choosing alternative treatment options. What are these options? What do you choose when it is important to be consistent in our care? Where do you find consistency when it is also important to provide individualized based treatment? The Clinical Practice Guidelines (CPG) for Physical Therapist Management of Parkinson's Disease sets the foundation to answer these questions. More than 1 in 3 therapists surveyed are not aware of these (CPG) treatment recommendations. This course will review the key principles that will elevate your outcomes with this patient population. But after learning these principles, how best to apply them?
We will explore online and local resources that apply the principles of evidenced based practice and are available for you to incorporate in your treatment sessions. Those with the largest toolbox of treatment interventions are best equipped to meet the needs of the patient. A large toolbox is easier to utilize when clinicians are familiar with the content and have it easily accessible before, during, and after patient care. Bring your laptop to familiarize with a variety of resources for easy access for future treatment sessions. Leave this course feeling truly equipped to ‘apply this on Monday.
Upon completion of this course, the participant should be able to:
- Quickly find helpful resources on our Rehab SharePoint and online resources to apply current best evidence to the comprehensive management of patients with Parkinson's disease
- Develop intentional interventions based on assessments considering disease stage, impairments, activity limitations, patient’s interests, and access to resources
- Apply treatment based on Clinical Practice Guidelines with a breadth of options for aerobic exercise, resistance training, balance training, gait training, community-based exercise, eternal cueing, and task specific training
- Refer patients to local community and online resources for exercise programs, educational resources, and support groups
- Acquire a depth of reliable resources for ongoing self-guided development of treatment ideas
